To reduce the bulk on the back of your project when using many colours do this:
Take one strand of floss, fold it double and thread through your needle. Do your first stitch and take the needle through the loop when returning to the back of the material and you have secured your stitch!
Let the needle hang loose every 7 or 8 stitches to allow the thread to "unwind" itself.
If you find that you get poor coverage of eg black floss on a white background, try separating your two strands before threading them through your needle again.
Make sure you wash your hands frequently to reduce staining of your project.
Don't leave your needle attached to your material as rust marks may appear.
